At 11:04 Pacific time, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California officially handed over the Speakers gavel to incoming Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. The changing of the political guard in the 112th Congress is expected to create more difficulties for passage of pro-LGBT legislation. The Human Rights Campaign reports that 53 House seats are now occupied by anti-LGBT representatives while anti-LGBTs picked up five additional seats in the Senate. In the House, Republicans hold a solid 225 majority, as well as positions of power in committees through which laws are made. President Obama has pledged to work with whoever will work with him – but there may be more challenges ahead than anyone now anticipates.
