Harvey Milk

Lots of events this Harvey Milk Day weekend.

Equality California is hosting a fundraiser in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 21, with U.S. Ambassador Sidney Williams, Madison Hildebrand of BRAVO’s Million Dollar Listing, newly named Executive Director Roland Palencia, and a slew of elected officials including Reps. Judy Chu and Maxine Waters, California State Senators Mark Leno and Kevin De León, California State Assemblymember Warren Furutani, LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, and West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Jeffrey Prang.

The antigay group SaveCalifornia.com has launched a campaign to tarnish the name and inspiration of assassinated LGBT hero Harvey Milk and overturn the law making May 22 a special day of recognition in California.  TO PURCHASE TICKETS AND FOR MORE INFO GO TO EQCA’S HARVEY MILK DAY PAGE.

Says LEA:

We will help students paint a mural of Harvey Milk and set up a community garden.  LGBT and ally community members will work side-by-side for the benefit of our youth while emphasizing the importance of working together to improve our community and honoring the contributions of our LGBT heroes.

From LA Mayor Liaison Suzy Jack:

We’re doing 3 service projects for 2 of the small schools at Roosevelt high school. Building a new garden, rebuilding an existing garden, and painting a mural.

This is a unique partnership between the City and Mayor’s Office, LGBT Community based orgs (Gay for Good came to the Mayor’s Office asking for help developing a service project last year and the Mayor created an annual day of service as a result), LAUSD and other community orgs such as the Partnership for LA Schools Enrich LA and the LA Neighborhood Land Trust, the latter two are advising and coordinating the garden projects. FAIR and the David Bohnett Foundation are also sponsoring portions of the projects.

We also have youth from LifeWorks and seniors from the LAGLC coming to work alongside Gay for Good volunteers, LEA volunteers, students and teachers from Roosevelt.

This is an official Mayor’s day of service.

There are also a slew of events sponsored in conjunction with the Harvey Milk Foundation – which was founded and run by Milk’s nephew, Stuart Milk, and Anne Kronenberg, Harvey’s campaign manager and political aide.

Here’s their press release:

The Harvey Milk Foundation Celebrates Harvey Milk Day 2011

Foundation to hold weeklong celebrations and catalog nationwide and international events with new website www.HarveyMilkDay.co

WHAT: The Harvey Milk Foundation celebrates the second annual Harvey Milk Day with events in Sacramento, San Diego and its signature events in San Francisco. In hopes that other states will follow California’s lead by establishing May 22 as Harvey Milk Day, the Foundation has developed a new online campaign to track events set to honor Harvey Milk’s legacy on www.HarveyMilkDay.co.

In 2009, the California State Legislature passed, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed, SB 572 designating every May 22 as “Harvey Milk Day.” SB 572 was authored by Senator Mark Leno and sponsored by Equality California (EQCA). May 22, 2010 marked the very first “Harvey Milk Day” in history and official launch of the Harvey Milk Foundation.

“The Harvey Milk Foundation asks that Harvey’s birthday be used to recognize and reward equality champions,” said Stuart Milk, leader and founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation and nephew of Harvey Milk.  “Such champions include President Barack Obama who has taken unprecedented opportunity to ensure LGBT inclusion in national and international affairs and to our tireless advocate, Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi, whose steadfast support has led to strong legislative victories for all underserved and marginalized communities.”
