Ten years ago Jewel Thais-Williams, famed owner of Jewel’s Catch One Disco – which opened its doors in 1972 and is the longest running Black Gay Disco in the world – established the Village Health Foundation, a non-profit that runs a free/sliding-scale alternative clinic for low income people in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. Jewel also holds workshops to help people learn how to take care of themselves and prevent illness. The Healthy Choice Awards are intended to acknowledge people and groups who promote wellness – and to make health and wellness “cool.”
