Besides (and I'm thinking the Janice Hahn congressional race here), can a Tea Party candidate get elected anywhere in Los Angeles County? Believe it or not, despite all the media reports, she has yet to make any formal announcement to her constituents about her plans for 2012. I know the South Bay paper, the Daily Breeze, has tried to contact her, and I've emailed her staffers. No one will return our calls and emails. It's beyond frustrating. I've supported Osborn's candidacy since before we knew how redistricting would affect the race (I'm a straight ally who met and worked with her at all the Camp Courage marriage equality workshops). Once we knew what the boundaries were, my hope was that Butler would chose to run in the new AD66, an area which includes most of southern part of her current district.  However, I've heard through the grapevine she believes she can't win there, since Democrats hold only a three point registration advantage. I don't know if she's right about that or not, but I do know that if she doesn't run there as the incumbent Democrat, the seat will more than likely go to the declared Tea Party candidate, Nathan Mintz.  I'm not the only one who's concerned about it either. Nearly 200 of Butler's constituents have signed a petition I started pledging to support Butler with campaign contributions and volunteer hours if she'll stay and run in AD66. Here's the link: http://www.change.org/petitions/assembly-member-betsy-butler-weve-got-your-back-against-tea-party-candidate-nathan-mintz I started this petition not because I wanted to clear the field for Osborn, but because I think this state is so screwed up, and we desperately need to get a 2/3rds majority to break Republican gridlock in Sacramento. We only need to gain two seats in the Assembly to get that 2/3rds majority. But if Butler moves to AD50, it doesn't matter if either Osborn or Butler wins, because the rest of us will lose when AD66 goes to a Tea Party Republican.  Butler certainly has a right to move and run for any seat she wants to, but if you're going to run as a public servant, don't you also have the responsibility to help make things better in this state and serve those people who elected you?
