Courage Campaign Honors Entertainment Producer Marcy Carsey

by Karen Ocamb on November 8, 2011

The Courage Campaign presented its first Spirit of Courage Award last Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Museum of Natural History to television legend and progressive philanthropist Marcy Carsey, who they describe as “one of the most successful business women in or out of show business.”  Carsey’s personal story is inspirational, having worked her way up from studio tour guide at NBC to prolific television producer. At ABC in the 1970s, she developed show such as “Mork and Mindy,” “Soap,” (Susan Harris’ show with gay character Jodie Dallas played by Billy “Marvelous” Crystal) and “Happy Days.”

Carsey joined business partner Tom Werner to create the breakthrough Black upper middle class and working class programs “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne,” as well as “3rd Rock from the Sun” and “That ‘70s Show.” Courage describes the awards night as “a whimsical evening to celebrate Marcy’s own unconventional sense of fun. No stuffy, inescapable sit-down dinner. No long speeches. It was just a celebration of Courage and the spirit of Marcy.”  (See photos on Courage’s Flickr site.)
