AHF’s Rose Parade Tribute to Elizabeth Taylor Wins ‘Queen’s Trophy’

AHF’s Rose Parade Tribute to Elizabeth Taylor Wins ‘Queen’s Trophy’

AIDS Healthcare Foundation's Tribute to Elizabeth Taylor (Photo screen capture from KTLA)

Stephanie Edwards, the legendary co-host of the annual Tournament of Roses broadcast on KTLA, perhaps summed up the sentiments of many as the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s tribute to Elizabeth Taylor passed by. “I wish she was here to see this,” Edwards said.

Yes, Elizabeth Taylor and all those with HIV/AIDS for whom she advocated and their care providers, such as Taylor’s friend and Rock Hudson’s doctor Michael Gottlieb.  Imagine those streets of Pasadena lined with those lost to AIDS who returned for a moment – like the last scene in “Longtime Companions” – giving a standing ovation of love and gratitude.

The float was well-received as winner of The Queen’s Trophy for “Most Effective Use & Display of Roses in Concept, Design & Presentation.” Can anyone say “irony?”

Here’s a KNBC report on the volunteers preparing the floats, including the AHF tribute. David Reid, producer of the annual World AIDS Day visual art project AIDS Watch was interviewed.

Here’s time-lapse of the float being put together:

KTLA did not cover the Occupy The Rose Parade contingent that followed the official parade – but click here for the LA Times coverage.
