Ellen on Obama: ‘It Takes a Brave Man to Take a Stand Like This’

by Karen Ocamb on May 10, 2012

Openly gay and married talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was among those who cheered President Obama’s announcement that he supports marriage equality (see the entire interview with ABC News here). Norman Lear reversed a decision to sit out donating to the Obama re-election campaign (big event at George Clooney’s home in Studio City tonight is expected to raise $15 million) and maxed out because of this decision. Lear has been a backer of the American Foundation for Equal Right’s federal challenge to Prop 8, lead by Chad Griffin, who said, “For the millions of young gay and lesbian Americans across this nation, their President’s words provide genuine hope that they will be the first generation to grow up with the freedom to fully pursue the American dream.” Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black told Variety’s Ted Johnson, “I am incredibly moved by the President taking such a strong position at this point in his presidency.”
