LGBT and marriage rights advocates were elated when President Obama announced his support for marriage equality two weeks ago. I wrote about it as a “Profile in Courage,” something that merited the JFK mantle handed him by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. But not unexpectedly, his stance has energized both sides of the issue – especially in battleground states. And all Mitt Romney’s Religious Right outreach during the primaries, national polls now have the presidential race between Obama and Romney about even (Real Clear Politics: Obama 46, Romney 44).
Also of great concern is the Republican’s “war on women” As I’ve reported here and Rachel Maddow has devoted hours to describing – Republican lawmakers seem hellbent on eliminating women’s reproductive rights and access to healthcare from contraception to abortions. NARAL Pro-Choice America is fighting to preserve those rights by electing pro-choice and defeating anti-choice candidates. NARAL President Nancy Keenan will be in West Hollywood on Thursday, May 24 (from 7:00-9:00p) to make the case. For more information, go to ProChoiceAmerica.org/LA.
