The New Jersey Star-Ledger reports that Dharun Ravi – the former Rutgers student convicted of the webcam spying on his gay roommate Tyler Clementi that is believed to have lead to Clementi’s suicide – appeared in court on Tuesday, May 29, and requested that he start his 30-day jail sentence soon. It’s the only way I can get on with my life,” Ravi, 20, said in a statement. He could have remained out on jail while the prosecution appeals the May 21 sentence, which it feels is too light.
The Star-Ledger also reported that:
On Tuesday, Ravi offered his first apology, saying he regrets his “thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish choices.” After spying on Clementi, Ravi had joked about the incident in e-mails, text messages and Twitter posts.
“My behavior and actions, which at no time were motivated by hate, bigotry, prejudice or desire to hurt, humiliate or embarrass anyone, were nonetheless the wrong choices and decisions,” he wrote in the statement, released through his lawyer, Steven Altman. “I apologize to everyone affected by those choices.”

That entire “apology” is filled with attorney produced legalese. It actually makes the entire incident more painful.
