LA PRIDE: Jewel Thais-Williams Honored by the City of LA-Video

by Karen Ocamb on June 10, 2012

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the city of LA honored Jewel Thais-Williams on June 1 at the kick-off of LGBT Heritage Month and LA Pride. Jewel is not only the owner of the oldest Black gay disco in the world – Jewel’s Catch One, but she also helped found the Minority AIDS Project and sat on the board of AIDS Project Los Angeles during the height of the AIDS crisis. In the past several years, Jewel has also devoted herself to the Village Health Foundation, a non-profit alternative health clinic she established to provide healthcare and health education to low income people. Full disclosure: I’ve known and counted Jewel as a friend for MANY years and consider her one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known. Thank you and Happy LA Pride, Jewel!
