Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other city leaders marked the city’s second annual LGBT Heritage Month with a June 1 ceremony inside City Council Chambers by honoring George Takei, longtime actor (Star Trek) and LGBT activist; Jewel Thais-Willliams, LGBT and HIV/AIDS community activist and owner of one of the first Black-owned LGBT nightclubs, Jewel’s Catch One Disco;, and founder of the Village Health Foundation and transgender activist Karina Samala, who has worked with the LAPD on new guidelines for law enforcement.
George Takei’s enthusiasm was catching, albeit not all honorees gave the mayor a big kiss:
