Oh, those clever, clever Stonewall Young Democrats! The political group and the Honorable Betty Yee are throwing their 2012 HERO Awards on Saturday afternoon (4:00-6:00p), Aug. 25, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel (404 S. Figueroa St, Downtown LA) and they’re subtitling the event: “Year of the Women.” Considering the intricate process to secure their lineup – honorees Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Hon. Debra Bowen, California Secretary of State, the Hon. Cynthia Loo, Referee, LA Superior Court, Susan Dunlap, CEO of Planned Parenthood-Los Angeles, and keynoter Rep. Henry Waxman (who’s has been fighting for science-not-religious-based legislation for years) – they were downright prescient in realizing how big a deal the Republican’s “war against women” would become this election year. But the event, hosted by Showtime’s The Real “L” Word cast member Raquel Castaneda, also calls to mind the 1992 “Year of the Woman” when Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer were elected to the US Senate, making California the first state in history to be represented in the Senate by two women. They joined newly elected Senators Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois and Patty Murray of Washington for yet another historical footnote: never before had four women been elected to the Senate in a single year. The newbies joined re-elected incumbents Barbara Mikulski of Maryland and Republican Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas.
