Other than a few moments of awkwardness at the beginning of the DNC convention, Los Angeles Mayor and convention Chair Antonio Villaraigosa pretty much beamed the entire three days. When he finally delivered his own remarks on Thursday, Sept. 7, the mayor - who is a leader of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry campaign and who came out early in support for a marriage equality plank in the Democratic Party Platform – was almost giddy with what the convention represented for DREAMers and LGBT people (catch the cutaway of a sign from Stonewall Democrats for Obama at 2:12 in):
“Look around you, everyone! This has been the most diverse, most inclusive convention ever held anywhere in the United States of America! A convention not only of symbolism but of substance. This is the first time that a major party platform recognizes marriage equality as a basic human right!….Whenever we’ve opened up our party and our country, whenever we’ve opened up doors for more of our people, whenever we’ve deepened our democracy and renewed our commitment to equal justice under the law, we’ve grown stronger as a nation.”
