Republicans really want Tea Party fawn Rep. Dan Lungren to beat his Democratic opponent, Dr. Ami Bera in November. But Democrats are fiercely fighting to unseat the nine-term GOP conservative, who is in the House leadership. According to the Center for Public Integrity, the re-districted 7th District congressional race in California’s central valley has now drawn more national attention and money than any other House race.
And the Democrats aren’t playing. Of the $4.3 million in outside spending, $3.1 million of that is against Lungren. Additionally, the League of Conservation Voters recently spent nearly $382,000 to point out his harmful environmental policies. The Sacramento Bee, which endorsed Lungren in 2010, now supports Bera because, “Bera also exudes more compassion for the plight of the middle class,” would “take seriously the threat of climate change,” and would strongly defend a woman’s right to chose. Lungren supports a Constitutional Amendment to ban abortion. On LGBT issues, well, Mike Signorile calls him a “wingnut.”
Meanwhile, progressive CREDO SuperPAC is fighting with boots on the ground: “These person-to-person conversations are the most powerful way to convince voters that Lungren is unfit to serve in Congress.” They are holding a door-knocking effort this Saturday, meeting at the Take Down Dan Lungren headquarters in Carmichael (map). “Elections are decided by those who show up. People like you who speak out about their values will make the difference in this race,” says CREDO SuperPAC’s Mark Hefflinger. Click here to RSVP.
Check out his Sierra Club Independent Action ad about Lungren’s campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry – all the more important given the anti-science Republicans (including CA Rep. Dana Rohrabacher) who sit on the House Science Committee:
