Watch: Rachel Tells Ellen Election Debates Are Like ‘Democracy Christmas’

by Karen Ocamb on October 11, 2012

Rachel Maddow appears on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Two smart lesbians talking and joking about election years politics, dogs and “Jersey Shores” on national TV. Rachel points out, rubbing her hands together in glee, that more people watched the Vice Presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin than watched any of the debates between Barack Obama and John McCain. Biden is “unscripted television…a riot, all the time.” And the stakes are super high because Mitt Romney won the first President Debate. So the VP Debate tonight between Biden and still relatively unknown Paul Ryan is going to be “super crazy.”

Ellen gets huge applause when she notes that Obama has come out for gay marriage. And Rachel says:

“I think it’s interesting to watch the Republicans. The ground is really shifting under their feet on this, and I don’t think they know how to adjust. They’re still fighting each other over who’s more anti-gay. And if they’re gonna try to compete for the public’s affections, they’re gonna have to start competing for who is more tolerant and accepting, I think.”
